A buyer's guide: what CBAM software actually needs to do, how to evaluate vendors, and an honest, directly-verified comparison — not a ranking where one vendor wins every category.
CBAM software is a digital tool that helps EU importers manage their Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism obligations — identifying which imports are in scope, collecting emissions data from non-EU suppliers, calculating embedded emissions, and generating the annual declaration the EU requires by 30 September (for the prior calendar year).
Most vendors in this category solve one or two steps well. Fewer cover the full chain end to end — including the verification step (ISO 17029 accredited verifiers reviewing evidence) and multi-client management for customs agents acting as indirect representatives.
Questions worth asking any CBAM software vendor before you commit — including us.
Does it cover the full chain, or just calculation?
Some tools only calculate; you still need somewhere to store evidence, manage supplier requests, and generate the actual declaration.
Can it export the official EU XML/XSD declaration format?
A calculation without a registry-ready export still means manual re-entry at filing time.
Does it distinguish default values from actual supplier data?
Default values carry a regulatory mark-up (10% in 2026, rising to 30% from 2028) — actual verified data lowers your liability.
Does it support ISO 17029 verification workflow, or just "audit-ready" storage?
From the definitive period, CBAM reports require independent verification — a real verifier queue is different from a static evidence folder.
Does it handle multi-client management, if you're a customs agent?
An indirect representative filing on behalf of many importers needs a portfolio view, not one account per client.
Is UK CBAM covered too, or a separate purchase?
UK CBAM (effective 1 Jan 2027) is a related but legally distinct regime — reusing the same production data avoids double entry.
What happens to your data if you cancel?
GDPR-compliant export and deletion should be a stated policy, not something you have to ask about.
Every competitor listed below was checked directly against that vendor's own public website on 01 September 2026 — feature names, positioning claims, and "best for" framing are taken from what each vendor states about itself, not from a third-party summary or a paid placement.
We don't declare CarbonAtlas the winner in every category. Each platform below is genuinely strong at something specific — this list exists to help you find the right fit, not to win an argument. If you work at one of the vendors listed and think this comparison is inaccurate or out of date, we welcome a correction — reach us at connect@carbonatlas.app.
